SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) -- The leaders of Haiti
and the Dominican Republic have agreed to cooperate in a campaign to eradicate the last vestiges of malaria from the Caribbean by the year 2020.
But what remains unclear is how the effort -- which health
officials say will cost $250 million -- will be funded.
Former President Jimmy Carter helped spur the deal, which also
aims to eradicate another mosquito-borne illness called lymphatic
filariasis.
He said Thursday after meeting with Dominican President Leonel
Fernandez that he's confident that a "constant commitment" from the two nations will wipe out the two diseases.
