DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- The man who police said single-handedly stopped traffic Thursday on I-285 is now in custody.
DeKalb County police spokesperson Jason Gagnon said that James Ferrell, 41, was the passenger in a car that got pulled over for a routine traffic stop around 11 a.m. When the DeKalb County officer went back to his vehicle to process information, police said Ferrell ran away; eventually, they reportedly engaged in a struggle during which the suspect shot the officer in the knee. The officer was only grazed and was put on paid administrative leave.
After that, police said, Ferrell carjacked the driver of a white pick-up truck that had slowed down due to traffic and drove to a nearby QuikTrip gas station, where he ditched the vehicle.
DeKalb Police received a tip around 5 p.m. that the suspect was located in East Atlanta. DeKalb along with Atlanta police were able to bring Ferrell into custody without further incident. He is currently being charged with Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer, but other charges may be filed.
