New Kia Plant Bringing Growth To West Point

WEST POINT, Ga. -- The ceremonial first cars rolled off the assembly line at automaker Kia's new plant in West Point, Ga., Monday. The cars are an indication of an economic boom for the once struggling west-central Georgia town.

Kia has already hired more than 1,000 people to work in the new plant. People in West Point say the plant is a God-send.

"When I was a teenager, it was pretty much a ghost town," said Cindy Huff, who has lived in West Point since she was a child.

In those days, West Point was struggling. Once known as a hub for the textile industry, that business dried up and the town's economy all but disappeared.

"To see it like this now, It's just unbelievable," Huff said. "I never would have thought that you'd have all of these cars lined up and down the street and new restaurants to eat in."

The reality of West Point's economic resurgence is credited in large part to Kia. Three years ago, the automaker broke ground on the new West Point plant, bringing jobs, industry and new growth.

"We're seeing a very diverse local economy," said West Point Mayor Drew Ferguson.

Ferguson has helped to usher in that change. He said Kia's presence has brought new jobs, new industry and a new spirit to the town.

"There are ample opportunities for families, not only that are native to this area to do well but those families from around America that are looking for a place to start over," Ferguson said.

"I've seen a downtown that I have lived in my entire life actually turn into something," said local resident David Zachry.

Zachry's family owns a general contracting company in West Point. Unlike other companies like his, growth has been the rule for Zachry Construction. They're striking while the iron is hot -- building retail and educational space in downtown.

"I'd say we're 30 percent work that has nothing to do with Kia and 70 that does," he said.

In an economy that has been difficult for many, West Point's economy -- once woven tightly to the textile industry -- now rolls steadily on the wheels of Kia.

If you're one of the many Georgians looking for work, Kia is still hiring for their West Point Assembly Plant. Go online to http://www.kiajobsingeorgia.com/.
