FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) -- Jason Elam has long been one of the NFL's most accurate kickers. Now, he's mired in one of the most baffling slumps of his career.
Elam has made only 6 of 12 field-goal attempts from 30 yards and out for Atlanta, a totally unacceptable success rate that has cost the Falcons dearly the last two weeks.
With Atlanta (5-5) now in a desperate fight to make the playoffs, Elam knows his job is on the line heading into Sunday's game against Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-9). The Falcons tried out four kickers Tuesday but decided to stick with Elam. Still, the 39-year-old kicker knows his "next miss will probably be my last."
