Cherry Hills Village, CO (Sports Network) - Bobby Wyatt carded a 2-under-par
68 Tuesday to take medalist honors after two rounds of stroke play at the
112th U.S. Amateur Championship.
Wyatt, a junior All-American at the University of Alabama, had three birdies
and a bogey at the CommonGround Golf Course to end at 9-under through 36
holes. That equals the record for lowest 36-hole stroke-play, tying the marks
by Hank Kim (1994) and Gregor Main (2011).
"I didn't think about (the record) going into today, but it's very humbling to
have part of that record," Wyatt said. "They change courses every year and
there have been a lot of courses that par is higher than 70, 71. But it's an
honor. There have been a lot of great names to play in this championship and
to do that certainly means a lot, but I have a lot of work to do this week."
Jeff Osberg and Cheng-Tsung Pan each shot 5-under 65 on Tuesday to finish two
strokes back moving into match play, which begins Wednesday.
Sebastian Vazquez, the two-time reigning Mexican Amateur champion, was one
stroke further back at minus-6 after playing at Cherry Hills Country Club.
Zac Blair ended at 5-under after an even-par 71 at Cherry Hills, while Brandon
Hagy was 4-under-par after playing on the same course.
The top 64 players are slated to advance to match play. A total of 50 players
at plus-1 or better have advanced to match play. The 17 players at 2-over-par
will battle for the other 14 berths.
Gary Nicklaus, the 43-year-old son of 18-time major champion Jack Nicklaus,
fired a 74 at Cherry Hills on Tuesday to end at 4-over-par, in a tie for 82nd
place.
