ATHENS, Ga. -- University of Georgia shortstop Kyle Farmer has been selected to play for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team, the organization announced Tuesday.

Farmer, an Atlanta native and three-year starter, will be part of the 22-man Team USA squad that will report this week to their training complex in Cary, N.C. The team's season begins Monday, June 25 and lasts a month with trips to Cuba and The Netherlands highlighting the 2012 schedule.

"This is something I've always wanted to do, to play for Team USA, and I'm really excited about getting to be a part of the team," said Farmer. "It's going to be a lot of fun, playing baseball and being around guys from other teams and seeing how they approach the game and the same goes for teams from other countries. My dad was on a team that won a gold medal.

He was telling me how Japan took infield/outfield before a game without a baseball. We are going to Cuba and that should be an awesome experience. I'm looking forward to the competition and learning some things that can help me improve and make Georgia better too.

Farmer has a .313 career batting average with 15 home runs and 124 RBI. Earlier this month, he was a 35th round draft pick of the New York Yankees and then announced intentions to return for his senior year. He has appeared in 160 games including 159 starts for the Bulldogs. As a junior, he hit .302-4-41 and ranked second in the Southeastern Conference with 19 doubles.

He is one of the top defensive players in school history. Farmer set a Georgia record with a .970 fielding percentage in 266 total chances at shortstop in 2012. He held the previous record at .967, setting it as a freshman in 2010. In the past two seasons, Farmer and the Bulldogs have established fielding records, posting a .978 mark as a team in 2012.

"We are extremely proud of Kyle and his opportunity to represent our country as a part of Team USA," said Georgia coach David Perno. "He has earned it. I'm sure Kyle will have a great experience with Team USA, and we're fortunate to have him coming back for his senior year too."

Farmer is the first Bulldog to be named to the USA Summer Team since catcher Clint Sammons in 2002. Sammons reached the Major Leagues in 2007 with the Atlanta Braves. Currently, he is in New Orleans playing for the Triple-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins. In 2010, former Bulldog outfielder Zach Cone participated in the USA National Team Trials. Cone is enjoying a breakout season for the Hickory Crawdads, the Single-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers. Cone is hitting .270 with 10 home runs.
