Cincinnati, OH (Sports Network) - The Cincinnati Reds will retire the Number
11 of former shortstop and Hall of Famer Barry Larkin later this month.
The club revealed on Tuesday evening that the ceremony will take place on
Saturday, August 25 as the Reds take on the rival St. Louis Cardinals.
It will cap 11 days' worth of celebrations for the 48-year-old Cincinnati
native, who was enshrined in Cooperstown late last month.
Larkin, who played from 1986-2004 with the Reds, succeeded the legendary Dave
Concepcion at short and spent all 2,180 games in his major league career by
the banks of the Ohio.
The Michigan product was a 12-time All Star and took home National League MVP
honors for the shortened 1995 season.
He will be the 10th person so honored by the franchise, after Fred Hutchinson,
Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan, Sparky Anderson, Concepcion, Ted Kluszewski, Frank
Robinson, Tony Perez and Jackie Robinson.
