Arabia Mountain, Dunwoody sweep Week 2 baseball games

Arabia Mountain and Dunwoody took center stage among four teams that posted undefeated records in DeKalb County baseball action from last week.

Coach Eric Hoxie's Arabia Mountain Rams reminded perfect on the season at 4-0, posting triumphs over Grady (7-4) Feb. 25, Dutchtown (14-4) Feb. 28 and North Springs (7-5) March 2 in a 3-0 showing.

Coach Chan English's Dunwoody Wildcats moved to 3-0 overall on the year with impressive Georgia Dugout Club road triumphs over Fayette County (9-3) March 1 and Carrollton (1-0) March 2.

Coach Steve Dennis and the Columbia Eagles likewise remained undefeated on the season at 2-0 with a 3-1 home victory over Southwest DeKalb Feb. 27.

Sophomore Trent Nash tossed a one-hitter and struck out eight for Columbia in a 6-1 victory over Southwest DeKalb March 4. Sophomore Jamal Devine (3-3; 3 RS; 2 2B), junior William Belcher (3-4; 2 RS; 1 RBI) and sophomore Jalen Atterburry (2-4; 2 RBI) paced the Eagle offense.

Martin Luther King Jr. rounds out the short list of local teams that have yet to face defeat in a 4-0-1 start. Coach Richard Gaines and the Lions battled to a 4-4 draw with Westlake March 1 and also rolled past McNair in a 19-0 shutout triumph March 2 in a 1-0-1 showing from last week.

Senior Gary Cannon tossed six strong innings in a complete game 4-4 draw against Westlake March 1, striking out five and allowing only four hits and two earned runs. Sophomore Jordan Thomas paced the offense while going 2-2 with two runs scored and two stolen bases. Thomas (2 IP; 5 SO) also teamed up with junior Alique Ivery (1 IP; 2 SO) to blank McNair on one hit in Martin Luther King Jr.'s 20-0 victory March 2. Ivery also shined brightest at the plate in the contest, going 3-3 with four runs scored.

Miller Grove and Chamblee also posted strong winning records. Coach Terrence Canty's Miller Grove Wolverines moved to 5-1 overall with a 3-1 effort last week, bouncing back from a tough 8-5 loss at Newton County to register victories over Stone Mountain (13-1) Feb. 27, Cross Keys (14-0) Feb. 28 and Lithonia (15-1) March 1.

Coach Brian Ely's Chamblee Bulldogs dropped a 1-0 heart-breaker to St. Pius Feb. 26 but then responded with two impressive triumphs over Tucker (4-1) Feb. 28 and Druid Hills (17-4) March 2 in going 2-1 on the week and improving to 3-3 overall on the year.

Senior Patrick Gaulden turned in a strong performance on the mound for Chamblee in a 4-1 victory over Tucker Feb. 28. Senior Ryan Gaines tossed a shutout for Dunwoody in a 1-0 triumph over Carrollton March 2.
