MCDONOUGH, Ga. -- As the Eagle's Landing boys prepare to face Columbia for the class AAAA state championship, senior Eric Wortham has to have the biggest smile of all. A year ago his team loss to Columbia as Eric was sidelined after a brush with death.
It happened at school during lunchtime. Wortham collapsed and his heart stopped beating. Thankfully Head Football Coach Joe Teknipp was there and was trained to use a difibrillator." It was a great thing to see him come back to us." says Teknipp.
Eric only remembers waking up in the hospital and being told that he could never play basketball again. Wortham refused to quit and spent the summer months working his way back. After the health scare colleges who were recruiting Wortham backed away. Middle Tennessee State did not, and Eric signed with the Blue Raiders.
Now with a record of 27-5 the Golden Eagles will go for the state title and Eric Wortham for a storybook ending. "From being told that you might not live, then you won't play again, to playing again and winning a state championship. That would be amazing and I hope it's the way it finishes," says Head Basketball Coach Clay Crump.
