State College, PA (Sports Network) - Penn State University's board of trustees
has accepted the resignation of Steve Garban, who was acting chairman when the
Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal broke in November.
Garban stepped down from his post amidst the scandal, but remained on as a
board member until his resignation was accepted on Thursday.
"These past months have been some of the most painful of my life. The horrific
allegations that came to light in November have haunted us all, but nothing we
have experienced compares to that of Jerry Sandusky's victims. My thoughts and
prayers will remain with them always," wrote Garban in his letter of
resignation, which was posted on the board's website.
Garban, who joined the board in 1998 and served as chair in 2010 and 2011, is
the first board member to resign since the scandal broke.
Current chairwoman Karen Peetz accepted Garban's resignation in a letter which
was also posted on the website.
"Earlier today I accepted Steve Garban's resignation from the Board of
Trustees," wrote Peetz. "I want to sincerely thank him for his many years of
service to Penn State University and for the leadership he exhibited today."
Sandusky was found guilty last month on 45 of the 48 counts charging him with
sexual abuse against 10 boys over a 15-year period and will likely spend the
rest of his life in jail after he is sentenced later this year.
