Queens, NY (Sports Network) - D'Angelo Harrison scored 26 points to lead the
St. John's Red Storm to a 89-65 rout of the South Carolina Gamecocks at
Carnesecca Arena in this season's edition of the Big East/SEC challenge.
Harrison entered the game as the second leading scorer in the Big East and
continued his torrid start, knocking down 8-of-13 shots from the floor in 29
minutes for St. John's (5-2). Amir Garrett recorded a double-double with 15
points and 11 boards. Phil Greene IV and JaKarr Sampson also reached double
figures in points, scoring 13 and 11, respectively.
Michael Carrera scored 11 points and grabbed 11 boards, six of which came on
the offensive end, for South Carolina (5-2). Brenton Williams added 10 points
in just 12 minutes off the bench.
St. John's came out on a mission to attack the basket and get to the free
throw line 14 times in the first half while not allowing South Carolina to
make a single attempt from the charity stripe. The Red Storm also outrebounded
the Gamecocks to help build their 38-26 advantage on the scoreboard at the
break.
The Gamecocks cut the lead to nine at the 15:00 mark of the second half but
back-to-back triples by Greene and Harrison gave the Red Storm a comfortable
lead which they maintained for the remainder of regulation.
South Carolina scored just two transition points all game, while St. John's
finished with 11. The Red Storm has never lost to USC, winning all four
contests.
