Martin, TN (Sports Network) - Tarvin Gaines scored a game-high 23 points, one
of four starters in double figures, as the Jacksonville State Gamecocks
delivered a 64-54 win over the Skyhawks of Tennessee-Martin in an Ohio Valley
Conference battle at the Elam Center.
Darion Rackley added 13 points for the Gamecocks (10-3, 2-0 OVC) as he
combined with Gaines to make 21-of-25 at the free-throw line. Ronnie Boggs and
Brian Williams chipped in 10 points apiece as the squad won for the seventh
time in the last eight outings.
The Skyhawks (3-11, 0-2) were paced by Myles Taylor who recorded a double-
double with 22 points and 12 rebounds, adding four steals as well in an effort
to offset his six turnovers as the team bowed for the sixth game in a row.
Justin Childs contributed 12 points for the hosts.
JSU ran out to a 9-2 lead to open the contest, but the squad ended up shooting
just 38.9 percent from the floor, identical to UT-Martin, which left the teams
locked at 22-22 at the break.
In the second half the Gamecocks nearly doubled their output, connecting on
44.4 percent from the floor and 15-of-18 at the charity stripe in order to
capture the double-digit win.
In a game that featured five ties and six lead changes, the Skyhawks hurt
themselves with 21 turnovers, which the visitors traded in for 18 points.
