Winston-Salem, NC (Sports Network) - C.J. Harris scored 16 points for the Wake
Forest Demon Deacons as they held off a late surge by the Virginia Cavaliers
to win, 55-52, in an ACC showdown at Joel Coliseum.
Travis McKie added 14 points for Wake Forest (8-6, 1-1 ACC), which has won
four of its last five bouts.
For Virginia (11-4, 1-1), Mike Tobey put up 14 points, Joe Harris netted 13
points, and Akil Mitchell tallied a double-double with 10 points and 10
rebounds. It was just the Cavaliers' second loss in the past 12 games.
Wake Forest shot an impressive 52 percent from the floor in the first half as
it got out to a 29-22 lead at the break. Virginia made good on only 38.5
percent of its field goal attempts in the frame.
The Deacons extended their lead to 14 with 10:22 left in the game, but the
Cavaliers went on a 20-7 run to bring their deficit to just one, 53-52, with
seven seconds to play. Harris drilled a pair of free throws for Wake Forest,
and Virginia was unable to get a final shot off.
Wake Forest won despite getting outrebounded by a 40-24 margin.
