Washington, D.C. (Sports Network) - Patricio Garino shot a perfect 6-of-6 from
the floor and finished with 16 points and four steals, as the George
Washington Colonials cruised to an 82-54 win over the Charlotte 49ers in an
Atlantic 10 Conference tilt at the Smith Center.
Reserves Bryan Bynes and Lasan Kromah chipped in with 12 points apiece for the
surging Colonials (10-9, 4-2 A-10), winners of three straight.
DeMario Mayfield tallied a game-high 17 points and eight rebounds for the
49ers (16-4, 4-2), who allowed GW to shoot 53.2 percent from the floor after
entering the weekend ranked ninth nationally in field-goal percentage defense
(.372). Chris Braswell and Pierria Henry each scored 11 in the loss.
GW set the pace early, as the Colonials shot at a 57.7-percent clip in the
first half to grab a 35-27 lead at the break.
The Colonials turned to defense and free-throw shooting in the second half to
maintain their lead, as they held Charlotte to 7-of-27 shooting from the floor
(.259) while sinking 24-of-29 at the charity stripe over the final 20 minutes.
GW won the rebounding battle, 40-27, and the Colonials also held a 24-14 edge
in points off turnovers for the game.
