Chapel Hill, NC (Sports Network) - James Michael McAdoo registered a game-high
22 points and 10 rebounds, as the North Carolina Tar Heels defeated the
Virginia Tech Hokies in overtime, 72-60, in an Atlantic Coast Conference
tussle at the Smith Center.
Marcus Paige added a season-high 19 points and Reggie Bullock scored 11 to
help the Tar Heels (15-6, 5-3 ACC) improve to 10-1 at home and notch their
fifth win in their last six games overall.
Erick Green led Virginia Tech (11-10, 2-6) with 16 points, although he shot
just 7-of-21 from the floor. It marked only the second time this season that
Green, the nation's leading scorer, was held to less than 20 points. Jarell
Eddie chipped in with 15 points, Cadarian Raines scored 12, and Robert Brown
finished with 10 points for the fading Hokies, who have now lost four in a row
and eight of their last 10 contests.
The Tar Heels were held to 31-percent shooting from the floor in the first
half and trailed, 32-26, at the break.
North Carolina did not take its first lead until nine and a half minutes
remaining in regulation on Brice Johnson's putback, which capped a 19-9 run.
It remained a one-possession game for the remainder of regulation, although
Green missed a potential game-winning jumper in the final seconds.
The Tar Heels simply dominated the extra session as they scored on each of
their first nine possessions. Paige scored eight of his 19 points in overtime
to help UNC pull away.
UNC was without the services of third-leading scorer P.J. Hairston (12.4 ppg),
who suffered a concussion against Boston College on Tuesday.
