Houston, TX (Sports Network) - Ricky Tarrant tallied 27 points and six assists
to lead the Tulane Green Wave to an 88-85 comeback victory over the Houston
Cougars in a Conference USA showdown at Hofheinz Pavilion.
Josh Davis registered a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds while
Kendall Timmons narrowly missed one of his own with 22 points and nine boards
as Tulane (16-8, 4-5 C-USA) overcame a late 19-point deficit on the way to
victory.
Joseph Young netted 26 points on 7-of-10 from the field and 8-of-10 at the
free-throw line to lead Houston (14-8, 3-6), while TaShawn Thomas dropped 20
points and cleared eight rebounds. Danuel House and J.J. Thompson scored 10
points apiece, the former pulling down eight rebounds and handing out six
assists as well.
The Cougars were terrific from behind the arc in the opening period, hitting
6-of-10 tries and 67 percent from the floor overall as they led
48-34 at intermission.
Houston increased its lead to 74-55 with 8:22 remaining on a 3-point shot by
Jherrod Stiggers, but Tulane never quit and scored the next nine points to get
back in the game.
Trailing by 11 late, Jordan Callahan knocked down back-to-back triples,
followed by consecutive baskets by Davis to get back to within one. Timmons
then went on a mini run with four straight points to put Tulane ahead.
With seven seconds remaining and Tulane holding a two-point advantage, Young
knocked down two free throws to tie the score at 85-85. Without taking a
timeout, Tarrant drove the length of the floor and converted a three-point
play with two seconds remaining to give the lead back to Tulane. Tarrant then
stole the ensuing inbounds pass to complete his terrific afternoon and secure
the win.
Tulane improved to 15-14 all-time over the Cougars.
