Greensboro, NC (Sports Network) - Jay Canty tallied 17 points, nine rebounds
and six assists as the Appalachian State Mountaineers brought down the UNC
Greensboro Spartans, 76-68, in a Southern Conference clash at Greensboro
Coliseum.
Nathan Healy scored 16 points for ASU (12-14, 8-7 SoCon), while Mike Neal
recorded 10 points, eight boards, six assists and three steals. Michael Obacha
added 11 points and eight rebounds for the Mountaineers, who have won two of
three.
For UNCG (7-18, 6-8), Derrell Armstrong paced all scorers with 20 points,
while Kayel Locke and Trevis Simpson netted 16 and 12 points, respectively.
The Spartans are losers of three in a row and five of their last six.
ASU opened the game with 10 straight points, but UNCG climbed back in the
contest to make its deficit just two, 32-30, heading into intermission. The
Mountaineers shot 41.4 percent from the field in the first half, but only 2-
of-13 from 3-point range (.154).
The Spartans tied the score at 53-53 with 6:22 left in the game on a Kelvin
McNeil layup, but the Mountaineers responded with a 12-4 run to go up by eight
with 3:41 remaining, and their lead would never dip below six points for the
rest of the game.
ASU shot 48.2 percent from the field on the afternoon and won the rebounding
battle, 44-33, which helped mask its game-high 16 turnovers.
