Fort Wayne, IN (Sports Network) - Frank Gaines scored a team-high 17 points as
the IUPU-Fort Wayne Mastodons defeated the Oakland Golden Grizzlies, 77-71, in
Summit League play at Memorial Coliseum.
Luis Jacobo was one rebound shy of a double-double with 15 points for the
Mastodons (13-16, 6-9 Summit). Joe Reed added 14 points and Joe Edwards
chipped in 11 points. Mario Hines contributed 10 points and seven boards as
IPFW notched its third win in a row.
For the Golden Grizzlies (15-14, 10-5), Travis Bader recorded a game-high 23
points and five rebounds. Corey Petros put up 15 points and Drew Valentine
added 12 points. Ryan Bass scored 11 points as Oakland had its seven-game
winning streak concluded.
In the first half, IPFW outscored Oakland, 11-0, in second chance points, and
also, 10-2, in points off turnovers, en route to a 36-33 advantage at the
break.
IPFW's bench scored 14 points after the break while Oakland's reserves were
held scoreless for the final 20 minutes. The boost from the backup unit helped
the Mastodons stay in front as the team hit on 48.1 percent of its field goal
tries in the second stanza.
IPFW used a strong effort on the offensive glass to hold an 18-6 edge in
second chance points, 18-6.
