Davis, CA (Sports Network) - James Ennis hung up a 24-point, 14-rebound
double-double as the Long Beach State 49ers captured the Big West regular
season title with a 77-76 win over the UC Davis Aggies at the Pavilion.
Tony Freeland added 21 points and Mike Caffey notched 11 points for Long Beach
State (18-11, 14-3 Big West) which also secured the No. 1 seed in the upcoming
Big West Tournament.
Corey Hawkins poured in 34 points and Ryan Howley and Ryan Sypkens each added
12 points for UC Davis (14-15) which had a three-game winning streak snapped.
Long Beach State owned a razor thin 36-35 lead at halftime after shooting 42.9
percent from the floor while netting 4-of-11 from the free-throw line.
The Aggies had a seven-point lead with 7:20 remaining but the 49ers whittled
that deficit down and took a 72-70 edge with 3:27 left on a 3-pointer from
Caffey. The Aggies were never able to recover the lead though, as they failed
to score in the final minute after pulling back within one point.
Long Beach State's 20-5 edge in points off turnovers proved crucial in the
contest as did its 42-25 advantage on the boards.
