Davis, CA (Sports Network) - Will Davis II registered a double-double with 18
points and a game-high 12 rebounds as the UC Irvine Anteaters held on to
defeat the UC Davis Aggies, 88-85, in Big West Conference play at the
Pavilion.
Also scoring 18 points for the Anteaters (17-14, 10-7 Big West), as they
closed out the regular season with their sixth win in the last seven outings,
was Michael Wilder who also pulled down nine rebounds off his own. Chris
McNealy accounted for 15 points, Daman Starring 12 and Alex Young 11 points
for the visitors.
The Aggies (14-15, 9-8) were paced by Corey Hawkins who tallied a game-high 21
points, but still the squad closed out the regular season with a second
straight setback. J.T. Adenrele was credited with 18 points, five rebounds and
four blocked shots, followed by Ryan Sypkens and Paolo Mancasola with 12 and
10 points, respectively.
Davis took control in the first half by converting 6-of-7 shots behind the 3-
point line and 15-of-17 at the charity stripe, not to mention holding the
visitors to only 2-of-14 beyond the arc and 30 percent from the floor overall,
en route to a 47-28 advantage at the break.
In the second half UCI responded by connecting on not just 55.0 percent from
the floor, but also 7-of-14 on the perimeter in order to assume control and
hold on for the three-point victory.
The Anteaters were outscored at the free-throw line, 23-11, but made up for it
by turning the ball over just five times and maintaining a 47-35 edge on the
glass.
