Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) -
ARIZONA: It was a rough night for the Wildcats against UCLA as Arizona was
routed 66-10 at the Rose Bowl. The loss dropped Arizona to 5-4 overall and 2-4
in conference play, while also pushing the Wildcats out of the top-25. Arizona
is also winless (0-3) on the road. Those road woes have been an issue these
past few seasons with the Wildcats 3-12 away from Tucson in the last three
seasons. Arizona's normally potent offense was held to just 257 yards, while
on defense the Wildcats gave up 611 total yards to the Bruins. Matt Scott
threw for 124 yards on 15-of-25 passing, while rushing for just four yards a
week after piling up 469 yards of total offense against USC. Ka'Deem Carey
rushed for a team-high 54 yards and scored the only touchdown by the Wildcats
in the game on a two-yard run in the third quarter. Marquis Flowers was the
only defensive bright spot, racking up a team-high 13 tackles including the
only sack by Arizona in the game. Arizona will return home next weekend
looking to bounce back against Colorado.
ARIZONA STATE: Despite Cameron Marshall reaching a career milestone, Arizona
State couldn't pull off an upset of Oregon State, falling 36-26 in Corvallis.
It was the third straight loss for the Sun Devils and moves them to 5-4
overall and 3-3 in conference play. Arizona State is 25-13-1 all-time against
Oregon State after the loss. Marshall eclipsed the 2,500-yard mark for his
career by rushing for 42 yards and a touchdown. His 2,508 career yards are the
10th most in school history. Taylor Kelly was the lead rusher in the game with
80 yards on 10 carries. Kelly has been the lead rusher during both of the Sun
Devils' road losses. Kelly also threw for 153 yards on 22-of-41 passing with a
touchdown and an interception. The defense recorded six sacks and had a safety
on a blocked punt by Steffon Martin. Osahon Irabor broke up a pair of passes
giving him a team-high nine pass breakups on the season. Irabor had only six
pass breakups all of last season. Brandon Magee led the team with 12 tackles
including one of the team's six sacks. Up next for the Sun Devils is a road
trip to Los Angeles to do battle with the No. 21 USC Trojans.
CALIFORNIA: California came up short for the third straight week in a 21-13
loss at home against Washington. The Golden Bears are now 3-7 overall this
season and 2-5 in conference play. The Golden Bears continue to rely on the
ground game as the team's 249 rushing yards marked the fourth time this season
in which California has had 200 yards rushing. C.J. Anderson led the way with
160 yards on 22 carries. It was he fifth time this season that Anderson has
led the team in rushing. Overall California was the more effective offense
with a 450-411 advantage in total yards over the Huskies. California also
converted on 10-of-18 third down attempts but turned the ball over four times,
three on fumbles, and settled for field goals on two of its four red zone
trips. Zach Maynard threw for 175 yards on 15-of-29 passing and had an
interception. He moved to 10th on the all-time passing list at California with
5,204 yards for his career. The majority of Maynard's passes went to Chris
Harper who had seven receptions for 101 yards. It was the third time this
season he has led the team in receiving and his career 100-yard game. Leading
receiver Keenan Allen did not play in the game due to a knee injury. Nick
Forbes was all over the field on defense racking up a team-high 11 tackles,
two fumble recoveries and an interception. The three forced turnovers was more
than he had in his career (one) entering play. There are only two games left
on the schedule for the Golden Bears beginning with a home contest against the
high-powered Oregon Ducks.
COLORADO: Things are looking pretty grim in Boulder, especially after Colorado
dropped a 48-0 decision to Stanford on Saturday. It was the 11th straight loss
to a ranked opponent for the Buffaloes and the fifth straight overall this
season. Colorado is now 1-8 overall and 1-5 in Pac-12 play. Colorado was
absolutely stifled on offense finishing with just 76 yards of total offense
including minus-21 on the ground. That rushing total was largely due to the 46
yards lost on seven sacks. The loss was also the first time Colorado has been
shutout at home since 1986. It's unlikely that things will get much better
next week with Colorado traveling to Tucson to take on the high-octane offense
of Rich Rodriguez and the Arizona Wildcats.
OREGON: The Ducks came out on top 62-51 in a highly anticipated battle with
the then No. 17 USC Trojans at the Coliseum. Oregon is now 9-0 for just the
second time in school history and has retained the No. 2 spot on the top-25.
The teams combined for 1,345 yards of total offense and 16 touchdowns. Oregon
had 730 yards of total offense, which broke the school's record of 720.
Accounting for almost half of that yardage was Kenjon Barner, who racked up
321 yards on the ground and five touchdowns. It was a school record for a
single game and the fourth-most in Pac-12 history. Barner is now third on the
all-time rushing list at Oregon with 3,151 yards. De'Anthony Thomas had 68
yards of total offense and scored a touchdown which was the 30th of his
career. Only seven other players in Oregon history have accomplished that
feat. Marcus MAriota had a career-high 400 yards of total offense with 304
through the air and 96 on the ground. Josh Huff also had a big day racking up
125 yards and two touchdowns on six receptions. Oregon will remain in the
Golden State next weekend when the Ducks take on California.
OREGON STATE: The Beavers overcame a first quarter deficit on their way to
securing a 36-26 win over Arizona State to avoid a second consecutive loss.
Oregon State was coming off a 20-17 loss against Washington in the previous
week. Oregon State is 7-1 for the first time since 2000. Terron Ward took over
for an injured Storm Woods at running back and rushed for 146 yards and a
touchdown. His 53-yard rush in the second quarter was the longest rush by an
Oregon State player this season. Cody Vaz had issues in the passing game,
completing only 14-of-33 attempts for 267 yards and an interception. However
he did manage to throw three touchdown passes. Two went to Markus Wheaton, who
finished with 108 yards on four receptions. Wheaton also got involved in the
running game with 57 yards on three carries. Brandin Cooks was the lead
receiver in the game with 116 yards on six receptions, including one for a
touchdown. This was the third time this season that Cooks and Wheaton have
each had 100 yards in a game. Oregon State will get a big test next weekend
when it takes on No. 16 Stanford on the road.
STANFORD: The Cardinal won for the third straight week by dominating Colorado
in a 48-0 romp in Boulder. It is the second time this season the Cardinal have
won three straight games. The shutout was the first by a Colorado opponent in
Boulder since 1986. Stanford's defense was again dominant, holding Colorado to
just 76 total yards including minus-21 yards rushing. It was the third fewest
rushing yards allowed by a Stanford team in school history. It was also the
second time this season Stanford has held an opponent to a negative yardage
total on the ground. On offense the Cardinal had a balanced attack that
included 230 yards passing and 206 on the ground. Kevin Hogan took the
majority of snaps at quarterback by completing 18-of-23 passing for 184 yards
and two touchdowns. Starter Josh Nunes had only five pass attempts due to a
coaching decision. Stepfan Taylor had a team-high 10 carries for 43 yards and
two touchdowns and did not play in the second half. The defense also got in on
the scoring with Ed Reynolds returning an interception 52 yards for a
touchdown in the first quarter. Stanford will face a ranked opponent next week
in a crucial conference game against the No. 13 Oregon State Beavers.
UCLA: The Bruins were dominant on both sides of the ball in a 66-10 rout of
then No. 24 Arizona Wildcats at the Rose Bowl. The Bruins' point total was the
most since 1997. The Bruins improved to 7-2 overall this season and 4-2 in
Pac-12 play. UCLA also jumped to No. 17 in the top-25. The Bruins had 611
yards of total offense and had twice as many first downs as the Wildcats
(36-18). UCLA scored touchdowns on six of its first seven possessions and led
42-3 at halftime. The Bruins yardage total was the third time this season they
have eclipsed the 600-yard mark in a game. The 308 yards on the ground also
marked the third time this season that the Bruins have finished with 300 yards
rushing. Johnathan Franklin powered the offense with 162 yards and two
touchdowns on 24 carries. It was his 17th career 100-yard rushing effort.
Brett Hundley was stellar as well, completing 23-of-28 pass attempts for 288
yards and three touchdowns. He now has 21 touchdown passes this season is tied
for the fifth most in a single season in school history. UCLA plays its last
road game of the season next week when it travels to Pullman to face
Washington State.
USC: A season that has been much less successful than anticipated got worse
for USC when the Trojans lost in a 62-51 shootout to No. 2 Oregon at the
Coliseum. The Trojans, who were expected to be in the national championship
race, dropped to 6-3 overall, including a 4-3 mark in conference play. In the
loss to Oregon the two teams combined for 1,345 yards of total offense. Matt
Barkley accounted for 484 yards passing and five touchdowns, while completing
35-of-54 pass attempts, but he did get picked off twice. Marqise Lee continued
his stellar season by hauling in 12 receptions for 157 yards and a pair of
touchdowns. Nelson Agholor also had a big game through the air with six
receptions for 162 yards and a touchdown. Robert Woods also had six receptions
and a touchdown but finished with 71 yards receiving. Silas Redd paced the
Trojans on the ground with 92 yards and a pair of scores on 18 carries. USC
was the more disciplined team in the game with only three penalties to the 10
that Oregon committed. USC defense was unable to put up much of a fight
against the Ducks, surrendering 730 yards of total offense including 426 on
the ground. Three different players finished with double-digit tackle totals
led by Lamar Dawson who had 11. Dion Bailey (10) and T.J. McDonald (10) also
reached at least 10 tackles in the game. Bailey had one of three sacks by the
Trojans. USC will try to recover next weekend when the Trojans take on Arizona
State at home.
UTAH: The Utes have seemingly salvaged what once looked like a lost season
after a 49-6 win over Washington State this past weekend. Utah is now 4-5
overall and 2-4 in conference play after winning consecutive games for the
first time this season. The 49 points was the identical total to the team's
efforts in three previous week and combines for the highest two-game point
total since 2011. Utah's defense held the Cougars to minus-four rushing yards
which was the fifth-fewest rushing yards allowed in a game by Utah in school
history. While the defense stifled the run the offense relied on it piling up
205 yards on the ground. John White was the leader in the game with 101 yards
and two touchdowns on 18 carries. It was his third 100-yard rushing game this
season. White also caught a touchdown pass giving him three touchdowns in a
game for the second time in his career. Travis Wilson completed 17-of-21 pass
attempts for 171 yards and two touchdowns and an interception. 14 different
receivers caught passes in the game with Sean Fitzgerald's 50 yards receiving
was the team-high while Anthony Denham and Jake Murphy tied for a team-high
three receptions each. Utah had six sacks in the game and didn't allow
Washington State to score until a Jeff Tuel touchdown pass at the end of the
fourth quarter. Reggie Topps was the lead tackler with seven including a sack
and an interception. Trevor Reilly had a pair of sacks, a forced fumble and
five total tackles. Utah will look to keep things rolling next weekend when it
hits the road to square off with Washington in Seattle.
WASHINGTON: The Huskies went into Memorial Stadium last weekend and came away
with a 21-13 win over California. Washington has now won back-to-back games
for the second time this season after a three-game losing streak in October.
Overall the Huskies are 5-4 this season and have split their six conference
games. Washington won despite being out-gained in total yards by the Golden
Bears (450-409). Bishop Sankey rushed for a career-high 189 yards and two
touchdowns in the game on 29 attempts. Austin Sefarian-Jenkins was also highly
productive with 152 yards and a touchdown on eight receptions. Seferian-
Jenkins 29-yard touchdown reception gave the Huskies a 14-13 lead that they
would not relinquish. Seferian-Jenkins receiving total was a career-high and
also set a Washington record for receiving yards by a tight end (1,170).
Seferian Jenkins was the only real productive receiver with Kasen Williams
(three receptions, 44 yards) the only other receiver with more than one
receptions or 15 yards. Keith Price threw for 235 yards and a touchdown on 16-
of-29 passing but was also intercepted once. As a team the Huskies converted
on just 4-of-11 third down attempts, while allowing Washington to convert on
10-of-18 chances. Sean Parker led the team with eight tackles and also forced
a fumble while Andrew Hudson's 1.5 sacks were the most among Washington
defenders. Shaq Thompson collected an interception and had seven tackles
including two for loss. Washington will next matchup with Utah at CenturyLink
Field.
WASHINGTON STATE: For the sixth straight week Washington State ended up on the
losing end as the Cougars fell in a 49-6 rout to Utah in Salt Lake City. The
Cougars are now 2-7 overall and are dead last in the conference at 0-6 against
league foes. Under Mike Leach, the Cougars have not run the ball very often or
very well and that continued in the loss with the team finishing with minus-
four yards rushing. It was the second time this season Washington State has
had a negative total of rushing yards. The Cougars converted on only 2-for-15
third down chances and had only one possession in the red zone. Jeff Tuel
threw for 232 yards and the team's lone touchdown on 23-for-45 passing. Tuel
was also intercepted once and was sacked six times. Marquess Wilson tied for a
team-high five passes for 73 yards. Wilson is now six receptions away from
taking over the career record for receptions by a Cougar receiver with 189
career catches. The Cougars return to Martin Stadium next weekend to face off
with UCLA.
