Charlottesville, VA (Sports Network) - Joe Harris scored a career-high 26
points and the Virginia Cavaliers posted a 73-55 win over the Virginia Tech
Hokies in an ACC contest at John Paul Jones Arena.
Harris made good on 5-of-7 shots behind the 3-point line for the Cavaliers
(18-6, 8-3 ACC), the team finishing 9-of-19 on the perimeter as they won for
the seventh time in the last eight outings. Akil Mitchell pitched in with 17
points, eight rebounds and three assists for the hosts.
The Hokies (11-13, 2-9) were paced yet again by Erick Green who logged 22
points, but shot just 4-of-17 from the floor as the team suffered a seventh
consecutive setback.
Virginia connected on not only 50 percent from the floor in the first half but
also 7-of-13 behind the 3-point line in order to take a 36-23 lead at the
break.
VaTech, which shot a mere 34.6 percent from the field in both the first and
second halves, held the hosts to just nine field goals after intermission.
However, the Cavs converted 17-of-19 at the free-throw line in the final 20
minutes in order to capture the double-digit win.
Green, who entered the contest leading the nation in scoring with 25.3 ppg,
had just a single point at the break and missed his first nine field goal
attempts.
