ATHENS, Ga. -- Georgia senior Aaron Murray has been named one of 16 semifinalists for the 2013 Maxwell Award, which is given to the annually to the collegiate player of the year.
Selected by the Maxwell Football Club National Selection Committee, Murray joins nine other quarterbacks on the list and is one of four players from the Southeastern Conference to advance.
The winner of the 77th Maxwell Award will be announced as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show, which will be broadcast on ESPN on December 12. Three finalists for the award will be announced on November 25 and a second round of voting will take place at that time. The formal presentation of this award will be made at the Maxwell Football Club's Awards Dinner on February 28, 2014 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Semifinalist voting for the award will begin on October 30 and close on November 24. Eligible voters include Maxwell Football Club members, NCAA Head Football Coaches, Sports Information Directors and selected national media.
Murray, a 6-1, 208-pound native of Tampa, Fla., has set a pair of SEC career records this season and is on pace for another. He has passed for 12,029 yards and moved into the league's No. 1 spot in the win at Tennessee. Murray then set a conference record in total offense with 12,327 at Vanderbilt.
Now, his 112 career touchdown passes trails only Florida's Danny Wuerrfel, who finished with 114 from 1993-96. Murray is also the only quarterback in SEC history to throw for 3,000 yards or more in each of his first three seasons and is the active national leader with 48 career starts.
So far this season, Murray has been named the Maxwell Award National Player of the Week and the Walter Camp National Offensive Player of the Week twice during victories over #6 South Carolina and #6 LSU. During that stretch, he combined to go 27-for-57 for 607 yards and eight touchdowns and only a single interception while also rushing for a score.
Murray graduated with a degree in Psychology in 2011 after posting a GPA of 3.3 and then posted a 4.0 as he started graduate school classes. He is currently taking undergraduate classes towards another degree. Murray was named to the 2012 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team and was the overall male winner of the Peach of an Athlete Award thanks to his contributions in the community and stellar work on the field and in the classroom.
Georgia has had two players win the Maxwell Award. Charley Trippi (1946) and Herschel Walker (1982) have both been honored as the nation's best.
The Bulldogs (4-3, 3-2 SEC) travel to Jacksonville, Fla., to face Florida (4-3, 3-2) at EverBank Field on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. CBS will televise the matchup.
