Gwinnett Completes Mini-Sweep of Charlotte

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA – The Gwinnett Braves (59-73) finished a two-game sweep of the Charlotte Knights (58-76) with a 10-6 win on Thursday night at Coolray Field. The G-Braves have scored at least 10 runs in three straight games for the first time in Gwinnett franchise history.

Despite the big win, things got off to a slow start for Gwinnett. Charlotte jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning against starter Zach Stewart. The right-hander allowed two hits and hit a batter to load the bases before Andy Wilkins stroked a sacrifice fly to left field.

Joey Terdoslavich answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning to tie the game. His team-leading 14th blast of the year marked his fifth straight game with a homer, a new G-Braves' record.

Gwinnett took a 3-1 lead in the third inning. Edward Salcedo walked, Jose Yepez singled and both runners moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Jose Constanza. Todd Cunningham punched an RBI single to right field and Donnie Murphy recorded an RBI on a fielder's choice.

Salcedo stretched the lead to 4-1 with a solo home run off right-hander Andre Rienzo in the fourth inning. His 10th homer of the season was also his second in as many days.

Charlotte cut the lead to 4-2 in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Marcus Semien, but the G-Braves answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth and one in the bottom of the sixth to make it 8-2. The first two runs scored on RBI hits by Sean Kazmar and Elmer Reyes, while the other two crossed on a throwing error by Knights' center fielder Jared Mitchell and a bases-loaded walk issued to Terdoslavich.

The Knights plated four runs in the top of the seventh inning to make it an 8-6 game. Miguel Gonzalez singled and scored on an RBI triple by Josh Richmond, making it 8-3. Mitchell cut the deficit to 8-5 with a two-run homer to right field off Stewart. The final run of the inning came on an RBI single by Michael Taylor.

That would be as close as the Knights would get, as Gwinnett scored two more runs in the eighth inning to push the lead to 10-6. Kazmar's two-run double put the game out of reach.

Stewart (W, 6-4) tossed 6.0 innings, allowing five runs on nine hits. Right-hander Pedro Beato (H, 8) allowed a run in the seventh inning and right-hander Carlos Fisher (S, 2) pitched 2.0 scoreless frames to close out the contest.

Rienzo (L, 1-3) suffered the loss for Charlotte as he was tagged for seven runs on six hits in 5.0 innings.

Kazmar led the G-Braves, going 2-for-5 with a double and three RBIs. Terdoslavich went 1-for-2 with a homer and two RBIs, while Salcedo went 1-for-2 with a homer and one RBI. Todd Cunningham added two hits and an RBI.

Mitchell led the Knights' attack, going 3-for-5 with a homer, two runs scored and two RBIs.

The Gwinnett Braves open a four-game series against the Durham Bulls tomorrow night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park, first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM. Right-hander Cody Martin (6-7, 3.51) will start for the G-Braves, while the Bulls will counter with right-hander Alex Colome (6-5, 3.68).
