The Lovejoy Wildcats head to Adams Stadium in Atlanta on Friday to face the Tucker Tigers in the #Team11 Game of the Week.
It's not the region championship, but it might as well be. Both teams are undefeated in 6A Region 4 this season. The two teams just became region rivals in 2014, and they met for the first time in the 2011 4A State Championship game. Tucker won 22-7.
Tucker has beaten the Wildcats in all three meetings.
The Tigers are 5-1 this season, 3-0 in the region. After dropping their first game against Kell at the Georgia Dome, they won their next five games. This season, they have scored more than 30 points in four games and more than 50 points in two games.
The Tigers are led by quarterback Xavier Shephard. Shephard has completed 62 percent of his passes for 928 yards and 10 touchdowns. Josh Vann has been his most popular target, grabbing 25 catches for 547 yards and six touchdowns. On the defensive side of the ball, the Tigers allow an average of just 10.7 ppg.
The Wildcats have played second fiddle to the Tigers since the two became region opponents. The Wildcats won four consecutive region titles from 2010-13. Their streak was snapped by Tucker, who was a perfect 5-0 in the region the last two seasons. Lovejoy was 4-1 in the region the last two seasons, both losses only coming to Tucker.
The Wildcats are 4-3 this season, but all four wins are region victories, putting them in first place in Region 4. They are on a three-game winning streak. They were blown out by East Coweta to start the season. Their other two losses were close games against smaller opponents.
Lovejoy is led by running back Zion Custis, who has 804 yards on the ground and six rushing touchdowns. Quarterback John Seter is a transfer from Connecticut and averages more than 200 yards per game. After allowing an average of 24.8 ppg in the first give games, the defense has held opponents to an average of 11.5 ppg in the last two games.
A region title could be at stake Friday night. Make sure to watch 11Alive News at 5 and 6 for a preview from the game, and then tune in at 11:15 p.m. for post-game highlight and interviews.
