ORLANDO, Fla. -- Joey Haddad and Andy Brandt scored in the third, and the Gwinnett Gladiators snapped a three-game losing streak Thursday night at the Amway Center, topping the Orlando Solar Bears 3-2.
Trailing 2-1 into the third, Haddad drew Gwinnett (33-22-2-1) even with a masterful deflection from in front. On the power play, Doug Jones let a shot fly from the near point that Haddad re-directed past Orlando (24-27-2-3) goalie Zoltan Hetenyi at 2:58. Justin Bowers had the second assist.
Gladiators Captain Andy Brandt buried what would prove to be the game-winner just 2:01 later. The forward let loose a snap shot from the near point that cleared Hetenyi's left shoulder and caught the far side of the net. Brandt's ninth goal of the season was assisted by Jones and Yuri Bouharevich, and that was all new goalie Jody O'Neill would need.
The Dartmouth grad stopped 24 shots in his Gladiators debut between the pipes, turning away several chances down the stretch as Gwinnett widened its lead in the South Division to three points over the idle Greenville Road Warriors.
Coyotes prospect Evan Bloodoff kicked off the scoring just 1:53 into the game, sneaking a shot from the bottom of the near circle under the blocker of Hentenyi. Haddad and Bowers chipped in the assists, and Gwinnett carried a 1-0 lead through the first.
Orlando countered with two tallies in the second period. Ryan Blair tied the game on the power play 4:30 into the period, and the first goal of Edward Levens' pro career at 16:34 had Orlando ahead.
The win was just Gwinnett's fourth when trailing after two periods this season (4-17).
The same two teams will meet again Friday night at 7 p.m. at the Amway Center.
