Vancouver, BC (Sports Network) - Vancouver Whitecaps FC exacted some revenge
on Saturday, defeating Real Salt Lake 2-1 at BC Place.
Salt Lake claimed a 2-1 over Vancouver at Rio Tinto Stadium in the Whitecaps'
last outing, but that result was reversed this time around as Camilo Sanvezzo
and Dane Richards scored eight minutes apart in the second half to ensure
three points for the Canadian club. Nat Borchers tacked on a late consolation
goal for the visitors.
Real Salt Lake came closest to breaking the deadlock in the opening period
when a cross from Javier Morales in the 25th minute was met by Alvaro Saborio,
but his header grazed the near post before the Whitecaps quickly cleared their
lines.
The Claret and Cobalt were left to rue that miss as Vancouver went in front
after the restart.
Salt Lake made a hash of a cross played into the box in the 58th minute and
Camilo jumped on the loose ball, firing a left-footed shot across goal and
just inside the far post.
Vancouver's lead was doubled eight minutes later when Darren Mattocks and
Camilo combined to work the ball from the left corner of the box to Richards
on the right. The Jamaican international used his defender as a screen to curl
a brilliant effort into the upper corner at the near post, giving goalkeeper
Nick Rimando little chance at a save.
Borchers denied the 'Caps a clean sheet by heading home a consolation goal off
of a cross from Paulo Jr. two minutes into stoppage time.
Real Salt Lake (13-9-3) misses out on the chance to go top of the West as it
will remain in second place for another week with 42 points on the season. The
club returns to action August 18 with a home match against FC Dallas.
Vancouver (10-7-7) improves to 37 points on the season to retain fourth place
in the West. The 'Caps will welcome Dallas to BC Place on Wednesday for
another crucial Western Conference tilt on short rest.
