Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Fourth seed Tommy Haas and former champion
James Blake were among the second-round winners Wednesday at the $1 million
Citi Open tennis event.
Haas, who was a runner-up in Hamburg in his native Germany two weeks ago,
downed Argentina's Leonardo Mayer, 6-4, 7-5 on the hardcourts at William H.G.
FitzGerald Tennis Center.
This has been a remarkable year for Haas considering he started 2012 outside
the top 200, but is now at No. 36. He'll take on fellow German Tobias Kamke in
the quarterfinals. Kamke defeated Australian Marinko Matosevic, 6-4, 6-3, on
Wednesday.
Blake, who titled here in 2002 and was the runner-up in 2005, ousted Swiss
qualifier Marco Chiudinelli, 6-2, 6-4. The American's title at this tournament
10 years ago was the first of his career.
Next up for Blake will be second-seeded Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov, who
breezed past Spain's Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo, 6-1, 6-3.
The 2012 D.C. winner will collect $252,600.
