CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- The Kennesaw State women's tennis team closed out the UTC Steve Baras Fall Classic by winning one main draw title and a pair of consolation draw titles on Sunday at the Champions Club in Chattanooga.
Leading the Owls was sophomore Virginie Stein (Gevelsberg, Germany/Gymnasium Gevelsberg) and junior Alexandra Apostu (Bucharest, Romania/ Ion Barbu), who both posted wins on Friday and Saturday to advance to the flight one singles championship match. Stein got the better of her teammate, defeating Apostu 6-2, 6-2 for the flight one title.
Sophomore Jana Hueckinghaus (Gevelsberg, Germany/ Gymnasium Gevelsberg) and senior Therese Lagerkvist (Koping, Sweden/ Adalsskolan) each bounced back from round one losses to take home a singles consolation title of their own. Hueckinghaus earned a 6-2, 6-3 win over Lipscomb's Alyssa Bellini in the flight two consolation final, while Lagerkvist defeated Tonya Walters of Lee, 6-1, 6-1, in the flight three consolation final.
Freshmen Isabela Castro (Brazil/ Santa Doroteia) and Blaire LaSure (Evans, Ga./Greenbrier HS) each posted a 1-2 record on the weekend to round out the singles play for the Owls.
In doubles action, Stein and Apostu teamed for back-to-back doubles wins to advance to the flight one main draw final, before falling 8-6 to UT-Chattanooga's Jenna Nurik and Kaylene Chadwell.
The doubles teams of Hueckinghaus and sophomore Tamara Plocher (Cologne, Germany/Albertus-Magnus-Gymnasium), along with Castro and LaSure each finished the tournament with a win and two losses for KSU.
The Owls next travel to Clemson, S.C., for the Duckworth Family Fall Classic on Friday. Oct. 12 to Sunday, Oct. 14.
