Donna Lowry is the state of Georgia's only full time Education Reporter. She created both the CLASS NOTES and award-winning CLASS ACT segments that are regular features on 11Alive News (WXIA is the NBC affiliate in Atlanta).
Donna joined 11Alive News in Atlanta in 1986. During her tenure she has covered the entire spectrum of news stories, and has won praise and honors, including Emmy Awards, for her coverage of everything from education and child care issues to child abuse and domestic violence.
Donna's career in broadcast journalism began while attending Chatham College in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where she received a B.A. in Communications/Administration and Management. After a short stint at KQV radio in Pittsburgh, she went on to obtain a Master of Science in Journalism (M.S.J.) from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Before joining WXIA-TV, Donna spent three years at WESH-TV in Orlando/Daytona Beach, Florida, and before that, two years at WEEK-TV in Peoria, Illinois.
Donna is a longtime Girl Scout and has served as a leader to troops from Daisies to Seniors at Randolph Elementary School.
She currently serves on the boards of The Sheltering Arms Early Education and Family Centers and the Black Women Film Network. Her past commitments include board memberships with Old National Christian Academy, Georgia School-Age Care Association, the West End Boys and Girls Clubs, and as an adviser to the Georgia Association of Family Daycare Providers. She is a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church.
Her professional/personal affiliations include memberships in the Education Writers Association (EWA), the Atlanta Press Club, the Magnolia Chapter of Links, Inc., the Atlanta Association of Black Journalists (AABJ) and the Southeast Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS), which recently inducted her into the prestigious Silver Circle, honoring lifetime achievement in the television industry.
Donna and her husband, (Ret.) Army Maj. Bennet Reid, Jr. have three daughters, Lakisha (married to Gibson Sims), Nicole and Analla.
