The stage is going up for Atlanta's next big music festival. Atlantic Station is the setting for the Shaky Knees Music festival. The music kicks off on Friday.
"It's really focused on indie music music which really just means bands that aren't big, mainstream, all over the radio," explained promoter Tim Sheetwood.
Indie music and a mall are unlikely pairs, but the promoter feels it's great match.
"It's a good fit because I don't think of Atlantic Station as a mall I think of it as a destination but everybody knows Atlantic Station," Sheetwood said.
It turns out the back lot at Atlantic Station is large enough to up the size of the festival from last year which was held at the Old Fourth Ward Park. This venue boats three stages with acts performing over four days. The bands rang from Modest Mouse, The National, Spoon, Violent Femmes and The Replacements to musicians you'd need a certain level of hipness to recognize.
"It's kind of going to span. You're going to see a sixteen year old that's going to be at the festival but you're also going to see a 50 old that's going to be there," Sheetwood said.
Even if you're not going to the festival traffic all around Atlantic Station will be affected. The music begins each day at noon, Friday May 9-Sunday May 11.
