A former police officer who says he was on the scene of the September 1996 Las Vegas Strip shooting of Tupac Shakur claims in a magazine interview that the rapper said "(expletive) you" to him in response to the question "Who shot you?" Shakur then lost consciousness, was taken to the hospital and died six days later at the age of 25.

His killing is still unsolved.

The explosive story surfaced Thursday in a long article from Vegas Seven magazine. The officer, Chris Carroll, served for 23 years on the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department before retiring in December 2010. He's also a cousin of the author of the piece, Sean DeFrank.

As DeFrank notes, Carroll's version of events "differs significantly from what has been reported previously." Here's how Carroll says Shakur's final moments of consciousness played out:

"And that's when I looked at him and said one more time, 'Who shot you?' He looked at me and he took a breath to get the words out, and he opened his mouth, and I thought I was actually going to get some cooperation. And then the words came out: '(Expletive) you.' After that, he started gurgling and slipping out of consciousness. At that point, an ambulance showed up, and he went into unconsciousness."

(Thanks to TMZ for the heads-up.)
