ATLANTA -- Atlanta police said a suspect was arrested late Friday in the shooting of an officer in the leg at a Little 5 Points restaurant Thursday evening.
Atlanta Police said they arrested Cameron Christian Maddox, 18, and charged him with aggravated assault in the shooting of Atlanta Police Officer Dexter Toomer.
Maddox will be transported to the DeKalb County Jail Friday night, and may face additional charges.
At a late evening news conference on Friday Lt. Paul Guerrucci said police aren't ready to talk about why Maddox shot the officer. "Just based on the integrity of the investigation we're not going to release the specifics in regards to a motive and other serious components of the investigation," the Homicide Commander said.
"Based on forensic evidence and our investigation thus far, it does appear that the officer was the intended target," Lt. Guerrucci said.
Atlanta Police spokesman Officer John Chafee said Officer Toomer stopped atthe Zestorestaurant at around 10:30 p.m. Thursday to get a soft drink and was returning to his patrol car when multipleshots rang out. One of the shots struck Toomer in the lower part of his left leg.
Chafee said the shots were fired from a nearby building, and it appears that Toomer was the intended target.
The wounded officer called for help and several officers responded to search the area for a suspect to no avail.
Toomer was treated at Grady Memorial Hospital in Downtown Atlanta and released Friday afternoon.
No motive is known for the shooting.Police are continuing their investigation.
