JACKSON, Miss. -- Jackson police say a 19-year-old Jackson State University freshman from Atlantadied from being shot in the face and killed at an off-campus pool party early Sunday morning.

Nolan Ryan Henderson III, who went by Ryan, was found lying on a walkway inside the Palisades Apartments near JSU campus.

Henderson reportedly lived on campus but was attending a pool party at the apartment complex.

Henderson, a 2011 graduate of Redan High School in DeKalb County, was the middle of three sons. His father, Nolan Ryan Henderson, Jr., learned of his son's death early Sunday morning. Henderson's younger brother learned the news on Twitter.

"He was my best friend," the elder Henderson said of his son. "He called and talked to me about whatever. He never had any issues, no struggles through school."

"He loved everybody. Treated everybody right."

Jackson police spokeswoman Colendula Green said investigators have interviewed several witnesses from the party, but do not know what sparked an altercation between Henderson and his shooter.

Henderson's father heard one version of the story:

"I've been told that he bumped into a football player. He apologized, but things escalated from that," Henderson, Jr. said.

"He never had a bad bone in his body. He was just a good kid," he said, adding it was "senseless."

Jackson police are still investigating Henderson's death. Investigators have not made any arrests.
