DEKALB- (WXIA) A Greyhound bus coming to Atlanta from Richmond early Thursday was greeted by an intoxicated off-duty police officer slamming into it. No passengers were hurt, but the Atlanta police officer was taken to the hospital.

Dekalb police said Officer Christopher Niezurawski had been driving the wrong way on I-85 for more than 7 miles when he hit the bus. It happened around five in the morning near Pleasantdale Road in DeKalb County. They charged the motorcycle officer with driving under the influence, reckless driving and driving the wrong way on a highway.

Niezurawski is on paid leave from the APD while the department conducts their own investigation. They declined to comment on the situation beyond confirming facts. Since he joined the Atlanta Police Department in 2004, Niezurawksi has only one complaint on his record. It was for his failure to appear in court in September of 2008.

Greyhound said 30 people were on the bus when it was hit. A company spokesperson said both drivers were able to self-correct their vehicles in time to prevent a head-on collision. Niezurawski was treated and released from Grady hospital Thursday.
