ATLANTA -- An East Point firefighter was killed Monday after crashing his motorcycle on Atlanta's west side.
Atlanta Police spokeswoman Kim Jones said 47-year-old Carl Blake lost control of his bike on Jones Road. He hit a curb and was thrown from the motorcycle and into a utility pole.
Blake was wearing a helmet, but it came off during the crash, Jones said.
Police have not determined how Blake lost control of the motorcycle.
Blake was a 15-year veteran of the East Point Fire Department.
"Firefighter Blake's death has had an enormous impact on us all," East Point Fire Chief Rosemary Cloud said in a statement. "As one can imagine, the mood throughout the department is somber. Blake was a model firefighter. On his last night of duty ... he bravely fought a house fire at the business Kitchen and Bath at 1562 East Forrest Avenue. Although his career has ended with us, he will forever be remembered."
