LITHONIA, Ga. -- Fire investigators are looking into the "odd circumstances" behind a fire that killed a man and his son in Lithonia Tuesday night.

The DeKalb County fire chief said the bodies of 38-year-old Darryll Stewart and 4-year-old Nathan Stewart were discovered in a car in the garage of a burning house on the 2300 block of Wellborn Hill Place.

DeKalb Fire investigators confirmed neighbors reports about the fire starting in the car and spreading to the house, but it's still not clear what started the fire.

"When I looked outside at first, there was nothing wrong with the car; it was just rolling back and forth as it was cruising to a stop, like it was in neutral, and there [were] no flames," said neighbor Jordan Bradley, who called 911. "But then I looked again, I heard like a pop, like an explosion. So I looked and it seemed like the smoke had started and the fire had erupted. And not even two minutes later, the garage was engulfed in flames."

Bradley said neighbors feared the family of three was trapped inside the house. "The neighbors that came outside actually went to go see what was going on, and they banged on the door. No one answered, so they broke into the house screaming, but nobody answered."

He said Darryll Stewart's wife came home to the fiery scene.

"I know she tried to call people, tried to call her husband -- no response," Bradley said. "They found out that they were actually in the car the whole time."

Authorities said the fire ignited just after 7:30 p.m. and was about 50 percent involved by the time firefighters and emergency services arrived. Neighbors were told to evacuate.

While fire officials and the medical examiners office do not believe the fire is suspicious, investigators did say they were looking into the "odd circumstances" surrounding the fire.

A fund has been started for the family -- you can donate to The Stewart Family Fund at any Bank of America branch.

Funeral services for the Stewarts have been set for Monday at 1 p.m. at the West End Seventh Day Adventist Church near the intersection of Lee Street and Interstate 20 in southwest Atlanta.
