ATLANTA -- An elementary school teacher was indicted in federal court last week for possession of child pornography.
Joseph Monroe Wilson, 43, was arrested Thursday. He used to teach at New Georgia Elementary School in Villa Rica.
U.S. Attorney Sally Quillian Yates said Wilson was arrested for ordering images and movies that contained sexually explicit images of young boys from a company in Canada.
The U.S. Postal Inspection Service executed a search warrant on Wilson's home in March 2012. At the time, Wilson was living in Dallas, Ga.; he now lives in South Carolina, Yates said.
While serving the search warrant, investigators found several images of child pornography on Wilson's computer and a large portrait of a naked boy in his closet, Yates said. The defendant was in the process of adopting a 7-year-old boy at the time; the adoption has since been canceled, according to Yates.
"This defendant did not simply seek out inappropriate images of children, but as a teacher put himself in a position of trust and authority with respect to children of that same age, and went so far as to attempt to adopt a young child," Yates said in a statement. "We will do everything in our power to prevent predators from having contact with potential victims in our community."
Wilson has been charged with possession of child pornography and receipt of child pornography. If convicted, he will be required to register as a sex offender and could face 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
