ATLANTA -- On Wednesday, DEA officialsdelivereda major blow to a well-established Mexican cartel working out of the Atlanta Metro area.
Operation Freak Nasty, which started as a street level drug case has,DEA officials said,expanded into Mexico and South America.
According to the DEA, the operation netted 35 arrests and the seizure of approximately 66 kilos of cocaine,6 pounds of methamphetamine, 1 pound of hashish, three firearms, and more than $3.2 million in cash and assets.
Offenders were arrested in Cobb, Douglas, DeKalb, Haralson and Fulton counties.
"These cartels are the pipeline for many dangerous drugs in our country and are responsible for many of the acts of violence in Mexico today," said Harry Sommers, special agent in charge of the DEA Atlanta field division. "Because of the dedication and hard work of all law enforcement agencies involved, these criminals will no longer distribute the destructive and deadly substances that wreak havoc in our neighborhoods."
