LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- Every Saturday Daffy's Pet Soup Kitchenin Lawrenceville attracts pet lovers who are struggling financially and often phsically.
They're peoplelike Roy Barret and his beloved Akita, Bo. "If I had to, I'd cut down on my food for him to have food," said Barrett, who is disabled and a diabetic.
Lawrenceville resident Tom Wargo started the food bank four years ago, and it now distributes one million pounds of dog and cat food, mostly donated, annually.Food distribution is every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Daffy's Lawrenceville location at 134 South Clayton Street.Clients must be able to demonstrate financial need, have their pets current on vaccinations and are required to volunteer five hours a month.
Daffy's alsohouses a thrift store, which carries new and used pet supplies. Wargo said his organization is always is need of donations, both monetary as well pet food or supplies.
Wargo recently began conducting the Saturday food giveaway out of a small building made out of a converted shipping container. He hopes to obtain more containers and put them in various locations across Georgia. He plans to allow sponsors to advertise on the containers to help raise money.
Donations to Daffy's Pet Soup Kitchen can be made at any Petco location and various other locations that are listed on DaffysPetSoupKitchen.info.
