MARIETTA, Ga. -- Otis A. Brumby Jr., who served for 45 years as publisher of the Marietta Daily Journal, has died at age 72.

The newspaper that Brumby led since 1967 reports the longtime publisher died Saturday at his Cobb County home after battling prostate cancer for nearly two years.

Over the decades Brumby became one of Cobb County's most prominent business leaders as he expanded his publishing operation to include 27 free weekly papers throughout the Atlanta suburbs. Though Marietta Daily Journal maintained a local focus, Brumby was known as a champion of government transparency in Georgia.

Former Georgia Gov. Roy Barnes, a longtime friend of Brumby, says "a giant oak has fallen that will be very difficult to replace."
