BUFORD, Ga.-- A high school basketball player has died three days after he collapsed during a preseason workout.
Sixteen-year-old Adam Smith died Sunday night at Northside Hospital-Forsyth. The Buford High School junior was taken to the hospital last Thursday after he collapsed on the floor while running. School officials say Smith fell moments after he told a teacher he didn't feel well.
Buford High School principal Banks Bitterman called Smith "an awesome young man" and said dealing with his death will be a tough for the school.
Buford City Schools Superintendent Dr. Geye S. Hamby released a statement Monday morning:
Adam Smith, student at Buford High School, collapsed Thursday afternoon while conditioning at BHS. He passed Sunday evening after having maintained a courageous attempt to recover for more than two days. Adam was a Buford native and lifelong member of the Buford community. Adam was a bright spot in the day of anyone who encountered him. His attitude, demeanor, and personality were infectious and positive at all times. Furthermore, his positive influence will continue to be an inspiration to all who were fortunate enough to know or know of him.
Adam was an outstanding student athlete who found many successes throughout his Buford years in academics, basketball, track, and football.
Adam's cheerful disposition, his commitment to Buford High and the Buford community will be greatly missed.
