HIRAM, Ga. -- A 60-year-old man was shot by authorities Wednesday afternoon at a home in Hiram.
The Haralson County Task Force was executing a search warrant at a home on Nebo Road at around 3:15 p.m. When they entered the home, they said they were met by the suspect, Daniel John Thomas Hammett, who was holding a can of pepper spray.
Officers with the task force opened fire, striking Hammett.
Hammett was flown to Grady Memorial Hospital in critical condition. He was pronounced dead at 4:35 p.m.
The officers who shot Hammett have been placed on routine paid administrative leave.
Paulding County Sheriff's spokesperson Ashley Henson said evidence found inside Hammett's home indicated that drug trafficking had happened there.
The task force includes personnel from the Paulding County Sheriff's Office, the Dallas Police Department, the Tallapoosa Police Department and the Bremem Police Department.
