ATLANTA -- Ten years ago, a 14 year old girl gripped the nation's attention.

Elizabeth Smart was kidnapped in the middle of the night from her bedroom. It took nine months for someone to spot her and call 911. Her captors, Brian Mitchell and is wife are now serving prison sentences.

Monday, 11Alive's Rebecca Lindstrom sat down to talk about her message of hope.

Smart says as a young girl she was incredibly shy. But as an adult, she talks publicly hoping to inspire those who work with children and give hope to those recovering from abuse.

Smart's created her own foundation to help educate children on how to recognize and defend against an abuser.
