Boca Raton, FL (Sports Network) - Xavier Roberson scored 23 points to lead the way as the South Alabama Jaguars defeated the Florida Atlantic Owls, 77-66, in their Sun Belt Conference opener at FAU Arena.
Augustine Rubit added a double-double for USA (3-3, 1-0 Sun Belt) with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Freddie Goldstein chipped in 15 points and Javier Carter added 11 points with nine rebounds for the Jaguars, who snapped their three-game losing streak.
Greg Gantt scored a game-high 29 points for FAU (2-4, 0-1) as it lost for the second time in three outings. Stefan McCoy contributed 16 points in 26 minutes off the bench.
The Owls jumped out to a 7-2 lead early in the contest, but South Alabama came roaring back and built a 44-33 advantage going into halftime. The Jaguars connected on 7-of-15 attempts from beyond the arc and scored 13 points off of turnovers in the opening period to take control.
FAU made 36.7 percent of its field goal attempts and limited the Jaguars to 30.8 shooting from the floor after the break. South Alabama maintained its lead by converting 17-of-21 attempts at the charity stripes over the final 20 minutes.
The Jaguars, who came in averaging 17.4 turnovers per contest, committed a season-low nine turnovers in their SBC opening win.
