(WXIA) - In addition to last week's release of thetrailer for "Star Trek Into Darkness," a number of trailers for action-adventure movies have been released over the past few days.

"The Lone Ranger," starring Armie Hammer as the masked man and Johnny Depp as his faithful companion Tonto, tells the story of the origin of the masked lawman who rides his shining white horse Silver and keeps the law in the old west. The new movie, from the "Pirates of the Caribbean" team of producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski, opens in theaters on July 3, 2013.

Will Smith and his son Jaden star as a legendary general and his 13-year-old son whose spaceship has crash-landed on a post-apocalyptic, long-abandoned Earth. When his dad is incapacitated in the crash, the son must travel alone to find the ship's rescue beacon in the M. Night Shyalaman-helmed "After Earth," opening in early June.

Tom Cruise stars in another post-apocalyptic thriller, "Oblivion," opening on April 12. Cruise stars as a drone repairman - one of the last people on an Earth abandoned after a devastating war with an alien race. But is he really alone?

Director Guillermo del Toro helms "Pacific Rim," which is considered an homage to the classic Japanese giant monster genre, made famous by "Godzilla." In the film, when giant monsters rise from the sea, humans, controlling giant robots, rise to fight them.

Bruce Willis and Dwayne Johnson star in "G.I. Joe: Retaliation," a sequel to the 2009 film, "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" and a direct tie-in to Hasbro's long-running G.I. Joe toy line and the Marvel Comics series. Most of the stars of the 2009 film did not return for the updated movie, which serves to reboot the franchise.

Speaking of reboots, "Man of Steel," from "300" director Zack Snyder and "Dark Knight" trilogy director Christopher Nolan, freshens the Superman franchise with Henry Cavill as Superman, and an all new look at the legend of Krypton's last son. Amy Adams is Lois Lane, Kevin Costner and Diane Lane play Jonathan & Martha Kent, Russell Crowe and Ayelet Zurer as Jor-El and Lara, and Laurence Fishburne plays Daily Planet editor Perry White.
