Kingston, RI (Sports Network) - Mike Powell tallied a game-high 18 points and six steals, as the Rhode Island Rams stunned the SMU Mustangs, 72-50, in non- conference play at the Ryan Center.
Andre Malone chipped in with 15 points and eight rebounds for the Rams (3-7), who have won three of their last five after starting the season 0-5. Nikola Malesevic added 12 points, and Xavier Munford finished with 11.
Ryan Manuel and Jalen Jones scored 14 points apiece for the Mustangs (8-2), who had won their previous three games to claim their best start since 2006-07 under first-year head coach Larry Brown.
A 3-pointer by Malone tied things up just under five minutes into the contest, and the Rams never trailed again the rest of the way. Still, the game remained tight throughout the first half as URI took a 29-27 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Rams began to separate in the second stanza. They shot a healthy 57.7 percent from the floor after halftime and made 5-of-11 threes to pull away.
The Rams shot a season-best 49 percent from the floor, including a 10-of-23 effort from the perimeter, en route to their largest margin of victory so far this season.
