Logan, UT (Sports Network) - Desmar Jackson and Jeff Early each had double- doubles for Southern Illinois as the Salukis downed the Nicholls Colonels, 65-53, as part of the World Vision Basketball Challenge at Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
Jackson scored 21 points and brought down 12 rebounds while Early had 10 points to match 10 rebounds for Southern Illinois (7-3). Dantiel Daniels added 13 points for the Salukis who have won three of their last four.
Fred Hunter scored 14 points and brought down seven rebounds for Nicholls (1-7). Dantrell Thomas added 13 points and six assists. The Colonels have lost five straight.
At the end of the first half Southern Illinois led 31-24 despite shooting 35.5 percent by limiting Nicholls to a 26.1 percent shooting effort.
Both teams improved in the second half. The Salukis netted 48.1 percent of their field goal attempts which was enough to overcome the 45.8 percent shooting from the Colonels.
The Salukis outscored the Colonels by a 42-18 margin on points in the paint and a 20-4 edge on second chance points.
