Fullerton, CA (Sports Network) - Sammy Yeager erupted for 30 points, leading four players in double figures, as the Cal State Fullerton Titans captured an 86-79 win over the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos in the Big West Conference opener for both programs at Titan Gym.
Yeager made good on an impressive 8-of-11 from 3-point range for the Titans (7-5, 1-0 Big West) as they won for the fourth time in as many games. Also having a strong game for the hosts was Kwame Vaughn with 27 points as he converted all 12 of his chances at the free-throw line, adding six rebounds and four assists. D.J. Seeley and Jared Brandon tacked on 14 and 10 points, respectively.
The Gauchos (4-8, 0-1) were paced by Alan Williams who produced a double- double consisting of 22 points and a game-high 16 rebounds, while Taran Brown responded with 20 points and eight boards of his own as the team bowed for the fourth time in five outings. Lewis Thomas pitched in with 11 points.
Yeager connected on 4-of-6 shots beyond the arc in the first half, leading to 16 points, which was more than enough to push the Titans out to a 39-31 advantage at the break.
Fullerton continued to attack from the outside, hitting on 7-of-13 shots beyond the arc in the second half in order to pull off the seven-point win.
UCSB was able to connect on an impressive 15-of-36 behind the 3-point line on the night, but at the same time the visitors also turned the ball over 14 times and were outscored at the charity stripe, 20-2.
