Arlington, TX (Sports Network) - Nate Engesser scored a game-high 14 points, the only player in double figures, as he helped lead the Denver Pioneers to a 50-35 win over the Texas-Arlington Mavericks in Western Athletic Conference play at College Park Center.
Engesser came off the bench to hit 4-of-8 shots from 3-point range in just 12 minutes of action for the Pioneers (5-7, 1-1 WAC) as they posted their second win in the last three outings.
The Mavericks (6-4, 1-1) were led by Karol Gruszecki with eight points, but the remaining four starters combined to shoot only 6-of-30 from the floor as the squad bowed for the second time in three games.
Both teams shot the ball poorly from the floor in the first half, with Denver making a mere 7-of-25 (.280), but six of those conversions came from behind the 3-point line which afforded the squad a 21-17 lead at the break.
UTA, which shot just 31.8 percent from the field through the first 20 minutes, returned for the second half and made only 24.0 percent, making it that much easier for the Pioneers to register the 15-point win.
The Mavericks ended up with more turnovers (18) than made field goals (13) in their lowest-scoring game since losing a 36-31 decision to SMU back on Dec. 16, 1989.
